What is Canonical link ?

A canonical link element is a important tag that helps web admins avoid onsite duplicate content issues. Normally, a website should have several pages that are all unique and distinct from each other. But if you have several very similar or even identical copies of a Web page on your Web site that could confuse the search engines, they will not know which version to show in the Serbs. And there might be one.

This is typically placed in the head section of a web page. It may also be placed in the HTTP header. You could omit the protocol or even use it relative to your URLs as well. You would want to note that this is not a command or a directive. You’re issuing to search engines. It’s not like if you specify a canonical Ural, Google will always obey that. This is more like a hint you are giving to search engines.

 

Google will more likely break the canonical URL as the preferred version and rank it in the service. But they might also choose a different bureau, which they conclude should be included in the service.

It's not a tag

Google refers to these as canonical link elements and not as canonical tags. And there’s a reason for this. It’s the annual metro tags like description, keywords, copyright and so on, how this general format, whereas this is the syntax of the canonical element. So this isn’t just a string that’s being used here. It’s a new URL. And so it’s technically not a tag. But most webmasters refer to these as canonical tags. So this will also be called canonical tags in this course. Still, it would be worth noting that technically at least, this is not a tag.
